Wow with your vows
Of course you want your marriage to be absolutely yours; to tell your story and create a memorable ceremony that’s about the two of you. But, how can you create a wedding that's not just any ‘I do’?
One way is to write your own vows – words, sentiment even humour that is unique to you as individuals or as a couple. It might be an emotional tug on the day, but so much more meaningful than words downloaded from the Internet – although that’s not a bad place to go looking for ideas.
Here are some other ideas to help get you started:
Begin by writing down the things that you most love and appreciate about each other.
List a few positive statements, things that are wonderful, aspects of your love that you don’t want to live without; that enhance your world.
Include two or three promises too – ones that you can keep mind you – for the future of your relationship.
Take some cues from tradition: e.g. rather than ‘in sickness and in health’ say I promise to love you in good times and the not so good times.
Allude to each other’s quirks – the I love you in spite of or because of statement.
Be succinct; your vows are an oath not an oration, a summary of promises and reasons for love said in a few sincere words.
Maybe finish with an ‘I love you’ type of statement: e.g. I give you my hand, my heart and my love, forever and always.
There are many ways to deliver vows too - in rhyming verse, in song, sign language; you can read them from cue cards, or repeat the words after your celebrant - and if you're feeling really brave and confident, memorise them.
